Coated Pearlescent Pigment for Powder Coating
Powder coating is a solid powder made of resins, pigments, fillers, and additives. Unlike traditional liquid coatings, powder coatings are applied to the surface of substrate through electrostatic spraying. Under the influence of static electricity, the powder evenly adheres to the surface of substrate. After baking at high temperatures, the powder coating will cure and produce a final coating with various effects.
Pearlescent pigments are a type of metallic pigment with pearl luster which typically based on materials such as glass flakes, natural mica, or synthetic mica. With fine coating techniques, pearlescent pigments exhibit different types of pearlescent lusters.
Usually the pearlescent pigments cannot be charged by static electricity and they tend to separate from the base powder during the powder spraying process. This will lead to uneven powder on the substrate surface and significant color differences. Sometimes, the pearlescent pigments are prone to accumulate at the nozzle during electrostatic spraying of powder coatings. After certain time of spraying, the nozzle will be blocked and large powder clumps will drop on the surface and cause rough or uneven surface.
Then coated pearlescent pigments are developed in order to solve problems addressed. Commonly 2 types of coating treatments such as fatty acid coating and resin coating are employed. Here we would like to highlight the advantages of resin coated pearlescent pigments.
After resin coating, pearlescent pigments become easily charged and catch same electricity as base powder. Therefore, during spraying, they can be evenly distributed on the substrate surface evenly and reduced clumping or nozzle blockage. Powder coatings produced with resin-coated pearlescent pigments exhibit following advantages:
- High dosage of pearlescent pigments with excellent hiding power.
- Bright and saturated colors.
- Resin gloss on the coating surface, resembling a clear varnish and making it a good replacement of liquid coatings.
- Resistance to fingerprints and anti-abrasion properties.
- No spraying gun blocking problems and continuous spraying
